Coronal polishing is one of the most useful expanded functions a North Carolina dental assistant can add to their scope, and this course gets you certified without pulling you out of the office for a week. Three hours of self-paced online instruction cover everything you need before you touch a handpiece, and you can work through it at home, during a lunch break, or whenever you have a quiet stretch of time. No classroom, no fixed schedule. Once you pass the online portion, you move into four hours of hands-on clinical instruction with an instructor watching every step, so you leave with real, supervised repetitions under your belt, not just a certificate.

By the end, you will understand the anatomy, materials, and technique behind safe coronal polishing, along with exactly where the line sits between what you can polish and what needs to go to the dentist or hygienist. It is a skill that expands what you can do chairside, gives your supervising dentist one more reason to trust you with more, and adds a credential to your resume that sets you apart from assistants who have not taken the extra step.

BLS stands for Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers — a hands-on CPR course covering adult, child, and infant rescue techniques, two-person CPR, AED use, and choking response. Every state that permits dental assistants to coronal polish requires current BLS. The in-person hands-on component is required everywhere — online-only BLS is not accepted in any state covered by this course. Certification must be from the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross, available at heart.org or redcross.org .

Complete the three hours of self-paced online didactic instruction and pass with a score of 75% or higher.
Move on to the four hours of supervised in-person clinical instruction.
Download and save your certificate of completion from DSI.
Present a copy of your certificate to your employer to perform coronal polishing under the direct supervision of a licensed North Carolina dentist.

Dr. Woodman graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 1995. He has been in dentistry for over 30 years and authored multiple articles. A Dawson devotee, he has experience with all aspects of general dentistry including cosmetics, orthodontics, and complex reconstructions, often working as part of a multispecialty team. He and his wife, Dr. Victoria Malz founded the Dental Staff Institute in 2008 with the goal of providing exceptional education for the profession.

Victoria Malz, D.M.D.

Dr. Malz graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 1996. She has been in dentistry for nearly 30 years. She has experience with all aspects of general dentistry including pediatrics, special-needs and orthodontics. She founded the Dental Staff Institute in 2008 with her husband. She has acted as the Director of the school for nearly twenty years, creating relationships with students and other professionals by providing exceptional education opportunities.
